What is Being Encoded in the Barcode?

Explanation of what information we use to create your barcode

Barcode Encoding

Every label printed in Syncrostore includes a barcode or QR code that is automatically generated for that item. The value encoded in the barcode is determined by what identifying information is available for the item.

How Syncrostore Chooses a Barcode Value

Syncrostore uses the following priority order when generating a barcode:

  1. SKU — used if a SKU has been entered for the item
  2. UPC — used if a UPC has been entered and no SKU is present
  3. Auto-generated Item ID — used automatically if neither a SKU nor UPC has been provided
Note: You do not need to enter a SKU or UPC for every item. Syncrostore assigns a unique Item ID to every item automatically, and will always be able to generate a valid barcode or QR code — even if no SKU or UPC is on file.

Why This Matters

Understanding barcode encoding helps ensure your labels scan correctly at checkout. If you want your labels to scan using your own SKU or UPC system, make sure those values are entered on each item's record in Syncrostore before printing.
