Understanding Variant Rules: Quantities, SKUs, and Barcode Labels

Keep these important rules in mind when working with variants:

  • Quantities must add up: All variant quantities MUST add up to the parent item's total quantity. Altering a variant's quantity automatically updates the parent total.
  • SKUs must be unique: Each variant SKU must be unique store-wide. If you don't enter a variant SKU, the system will automatically generate one for you.
  • Barcode labels show attributes: When printing barcodes for variant items, the label includes the attribute values (e.g., "Color: Blue, Size: M"), allowing cashiers to identify which variant the item is.
  • Deleting attributes regenerates variants: If you delete an attribute after generating variants, the system will regenerate all variants and you may need to re-enter information.
