Understanding SKU and UPC Fields When Adding Inventory
SKU (Stock Keeping Unit): A unique product identifier that can be a mix of letters and digits. The SKU you assign must be unique store-wide — no two items in the store can share the same SKU.
UPC (Universal Product Code): A unique product identifier that can be a mix of letters and digits, though purely digits is more common. Like SKU, the UPC must be unique store-wide.
Important Notes:
- Neither SKU nor UPC is required, but we encourage vendors to use them for efficient item lookup and barcode scanning.
- If you create variants and do not enter variant SKUs, the system will automatically generate unique ones for you.
- Duplicate UPCs will trigger a yellow warning banner on the Inventory page.
