Understanding Cash Drawer Variance: Shortage, Overage, and Perfect Count

When closing a cash drawer, the Variance tracker shows the difference between the expected amount (what the system calculated based on transactions) and the actual amount (what you counted).

  • Negative variance (red) — You counted less money than expected. This indicates a shortage.
  • Zero variance ($0.00) — Your count matches exactly. This is a perfect count.
  • Positive variance (green) — You counted more money than expected. This indicates an overage.

If your drawer variance is not zero, follow your store's established procedures for reporting and resolving discrepancies.
