How to Fix barcode labels not scanning
If you barcodes come out fuzzy, too bold or just not able to scan, here are some step to troubleshoot.
Fixing Fuzzy, Bold, or Unscannable Barcodes (iDPRT SP-Series)
Almost every time, this is a settings problem rather than a broken printer. Work down this list in order and test-print after each step.
1. Print at 100%, never "fit to page"
These printers are 203 dpi. If the label gets scaled even slightly, the bars get resampled and the edges go soft, which is exactly what a scanner can't read.
- In Printing Preferences, confirm the paper/stock size matches the label you actually loaded (for example 2.25" x 1.25"). Do not use a generic size.
- If you're printing from a browser, set Scale to 100% (not "Fit to printable area"), Margins to None, and select the exact label size as the paper.
2. Turn off dithering and halftone
This is the number one cause of fuzzy barcodes. Dithering renders black as a scattered grey pattern, so the bar edges come out ragged.
- Go to Printing Preferences, then Options or Advanced, and find Dithering (sometimes labeled Halftone or Graphics Mode).
- Set it to None or Threshold. Never use Diffusion, Ordered, or Halftone.
3. Turn the darkness down
Counter-intuitive, but barcodes that are too bold fail more often than ones that are too light. Excess heat spreads the ink sideways, the white gaps shrink, and the scanner can no longer tell the bars apart.
- If the bars look thick or blobby and the gaps look thin, lower the darkness 2 to 3 steps.
- If the bars look faded, streaky, or have white pinholes, raise it 2 steps.
- Start in the middle of the range (around 8 on a 0 to 15 scale) and adjust from there.
4. Slow the print speed down
Top speed is meant for shipping labels with large text, not dense barcodes. Drop to 3 to 4 ips (roughly 76 to 102 mm/s) in Printing Preferences. On small 1" to 2" labels this costs almost nothing in throughput and sharpens the bars noticeably.
5. Calibrate the media
If the printer is guessing where each label starts, the artwork drifts and the bars get clipped or stretched.
- Set the Media Type correctly: Gap for standard die-cut labels, Black Mark for labels with a black bar on the back, Continuous for receipt or roll stock.
- Then run auto-calibration: with the printer idle, hold the feed button until it feeds several blank labels and stops.
- Repeat this every time you change label size or brand.
6. Clean the printhead
Adhesive residue and paper dust cause voids and blurring in the same spot on every label. Power the printer off, open the lid, and wipe the thin printhead strip with a lint-free swab and 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry completely before closing. If the defect always appears in the same vertical line, this is your problem.
7. Check the label stock itself
- The stock must be direct thermal. Thermal transfer labels require a ribbon and will print faint or blank on these models.
- Labels stored in a hot car, near a window, or in direct sunlight turn grey and lose contrast permanently. Try a fresh roll from the middle of the box.
- Make sure the roll is seated between the media guides and that the guides are snug. A roll that wanders side to side will skew the bars.
8. Give the barcode room
If you're fitting a long SKU onto a 1" label, the bars end up narrower than the printer can physically resolve at 203 dpi. Either shorten the encoded value, move up to a larger label, or switch symbology (Code 128 is denser than Code 39). Also leave a quiet zone of at least 1/8" of blank white space to the left and right of the barcode, with no text or borders in it.
9. Reinstall the driver
A driver installed for the wrong model, or left over from an older printer, will silently print at the wrong resolution.
- Go to Settings, then Bluetooth & Devices, then Printers & Scanners, and remove the printer.
- Open Print Server Properties, go to the Drivers tab, and remove the old iDPRT driver as well.
- Reboot, install the current driver for your exact model (SP310, SP320, SP410, SP410BT, SP420, or SP420BT), and re-run calibration.
