What is Being Encoded in the Barcode?

Explanation of what information we use to create your barcode

Barcode Encoding

Every label printed in Syncrostore includes a barcode or QR code that is automatically generated for that item. The value encoded is a unique barcode identifier assigned by Syncrostore — it is not your SKU, UPC, or Item ID.

What Gets Encoded

When an item is created, Syncrostore assigns it a barcode identifier that is guaranteed to be unique across every store on the platform, not just within your own. That identifier is what gets encoded on the label.

Because the identifier is independent of your other item fields:

  • Every item gets a scannable label immediately — no SKU or UPC required
  • Changing an item's SKU or UPC does not invalidate labels already printed
  • A label printed at one store scans correctly at any other store, with no collisions between stores
Note: SKU and UPC are still fully supported. They remain searchable at the register and throughout Syncrostore — they simply aren't the value printed on the barcode.

Why This Matters

Because the encoded value is unique platform-wide, there is no risk of two items from different stores sharing a barcode. Merchandise transferred or consigned between locations scans correctly without relabeling, and you never have to maintain your own numbering scheme to keep labels from conflicting.
